Does South Carolina Require Renters Insurance? 

South Carolina does not have a law mandating renters insurance; however, it may be required by landlords or property owners. A rental agreement may state that a tenant must have a certain amount of renters insurance. Even if this is not the case, it is still highly recommended that tenants have a renters insurance policy to protect themselves from unexpected incidents. While your landlord might have insurance, it only protects the structure of the building. Your belongings are not covered under those policies. If an incident damages your personal property, you will be responsible for any associated costs.
